If you do not deal with all your reactions to a participant then you will be unable to give that participant the guidance they need to discover their own Truth, their own contact with the Divine. Quite early in my career as a Master this was my biggest fear, that somehow I would fail a participant – or worse I would become an obstacle to their enlightenment. So I had a very strong incentive to deal with all my reactions to participants.
I should emphasise that it wasn’t only negative reactions that could be an obstacle. If I fancied a beautiful woman then this would be as serious an obstacle as being very critical or disliking them. If you really wish to serve all the participants on your Intensives then you have to deal with all your reactions to them.
Here is a simple test that you can use during an Intensive to find out whether you have dealt with all your reactions. “Do you see every participant as doing their best?” If you do, all is well and good; if not you have work to do. The most common problem is criticalness. During the Intensive itself you may find it hard to put enough time and attention into resolving criticalness toward a participant. However once the Intensive is over there is no excuse for not devoting enough time to resolve the issue. You know it is resolved when your emotional reaction to the participant shifts from criticalness to empathy. As explained in the Tools section, the criticalness exercise is one of the most powerful tools for enabling you to both be kinder and also become more aware of your unconscious.
Your ability to remain open to all participants is a fairly good measure of your own personal growth. Whilst you have many unresolved traumas or attitudes you will struggle to be open to everyone. As you succeed in resolving issues it becomes easier. There is a lot more involved with dealing with participants, my experience is set out at length here.
